LA BATAILLA POR LA SUPREMACÍA DE LA INTELIGENCIA ARTIFICIAL: CHIPS, ENERGÍA Y EL NUEVO ORDEN GEOPOLÍTICO

Francisco C. De La Torre

Ventaja: Estados Unidos (A corto/mediano plazo).

THE BATTLE FOR AI SUPREMACY: CHIPS, ENERGY, AND THE NEW GEOPOLITICAL ORDER

August 4, 2026

CDMX-AUSTIN, Texas — The frontier of global technological progress is no longer measured solely by the elegance of software algorithms or the sophistication of user interfaces. At the epicenter of the largest economic and geopolitical restructuring of the past century, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed into a relentless race for the control of matter and energy: silicon wafers, industrial cooling infrastructure, and megawatts of electrical power.

As Elon Musk highlighted in a revealing interview with *The Economist*, the future of AI—and consequently, global economic supremacy—depends on an inexorable physical equation: the capacity to convert energy and compute into digital and physical intelligence (humanoid robotics). Whichever nation or sector dominates this value chain over the next decade will define the geopolitical balance of power.

## 1. The Technical Front: The Physical Equation of Massive Compute

Frontier AI development has evolved from a purely mathematical discipline into a heavy engineering challenge. Today’s global competition is being fought across four interconnected fronts:

1. **The Chip Race:** The shortage of graphics processors (GPUs and TPUs) was the first major bottleneck. Performance per watt and advanced lithography directly dictate the operational cost of training Large Language Models (LLMs).
2. **The Electrical Bottleneck:** Training a single frontier model currently requires hundreds of megawatts. Data center power demand is expanding at a pace that exceeds the addition rate of new generation capacity across traditional electrical grids.
3. **Cooling Infrastructure:** The high thermal density of modern chips is forcing a massive industry shift from air cooling to **direct-to-chip liquid cooling** and industrial immersion systems, lowering indirect water and energy consumption.
4. **Efficient Algorithms and Inexpensive Inference:** As training costs stabilize, the battle is shifting toward **inference** (day-to-day model execution). Recent advances in model distillation and architectural optimization—demonstrated by both Western models (such as Claude and Grok) and frontier Chinese architectures (such as Kimi K3)—show that efficient algorithms can drastically reduce operational costs per token.
