VR Storytelling 101 | The School of The New York Times

You’ve seen the films — come learn the craft.

With its immersive storytelling capabilities, virtual reality (VR) is a rapidly growing field of interest for filmmakers, content creators and anyone looking to experience a world of new stories in a creative, experiential format. In a subject in which change is the only constant, The New York Times’ NYT VR has emerged as an industry leader, delivering extraordinary visual experiences that are transforming the way we consume news and other types of content.

In VR Storytelling 101, The Times’s award-winning team — led by Graham Roberts, director of immersive platforms storytelling, and Jenna Pirog, senior producer, immersive journalism — teaches you the fundamentals of storytelling in VR film-making.

In this course, you will:

This course is the first of the four-part Certificate in Virtual Reality. Courses in the certificate aim to give VR beginners an understanding of VR as an immersive digital medium for telling powerful stories. Through NYT VR projects, you will explore how audience experience impacts VR storytelling as you go through the creation process of pre-production, production, and post-production. Throughout the courses, NYT VR shares its insights and lessons from producing more than dozens of VR films. Learn from The Times’s experience of what works and what doesn’t, so it can get you up to speed in how to use and produce in VR.

You will receive a Certificate of Completion upon finishing the course and it will apply towards the Certificate in Virtual Reality if you chose to continue your studies.

NOTE: Although not necessary to successfully complete this course, it is recommended that you have a mobile device, headphones and a VR headset to fully experience VR. VR headsets range in price from $5 to hundreds of dollars (search “VR headset” online and you’ll pull up a list of options, including this one from Google). You can also go to a nearby electronics store to try some gear prior to purchase.
